Dispersal order to be in place to tackle anti-social behaviour and street racing

We are issuing a dispersal order around the A34 from Stafford to Trentham as we look to crack down on anti-social behaviour (ASB) and street racing.

It comes following recent issues of illegal street racing on the A34.

We have issued more than 40 warnings after two recent car meets in the area.

The order, granted under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, gives officers the power to disperse anyone for the purpose of or reducing the likelihood of members of the public in the locality being harassed, alarmed, distressed or the occurrence of crime and disorder.

Failing to comply with an order is a criminal offence and police can return anyone under the age of 16 to their home address.

As part of the powers, we can issue the notices for a period of up to 48 hours and anyone found breaching a notice is liable to be arrested and face further action.

The dispersal order is to come into force from 6pm today (Friday 9 February) until 1am on Sunday (11 February), with a view to be extended.

The order has been granted for officers and PCSOs to use in the locality of the A34, near junction 14 of the M6, and Trentham Poachers Cottage.

The order will also enable us to seize vehicles we believe to be involved in ASB.

Chief Inspector Giles Parsons, of Stafford local policing team, said: “Following recent issues of street racing and an increase in calls from concerned residents, officers will be patrolling the area to tackle any instances of crime or anti-social behaviour.

“We understand the impact this behaviour can have and are continuing to work with partner agencies to tackle issues reported by our communities.”

If drivers are seen racing illegally, action will be taken as Ch Insp Parsons explains: “The minority who feel that they can use roads as race tracks, or car parks as performance areas will be dealt with accordingly.

“Dangerous driving and anti-social meets can cause a great deal of disruption to local communities and can put motorists at risk of serious injury.

“Those found driving carelessly or dangerously, causing unnecessary noise nuisance or acting in an anti-social manner, could see action taken against them in the form of warnings and vehicle seizure, fixed penalty ticket, summons to court and possible arrest.”

Anyone with any concerns can contact Staffordshire Police by reporting online at www.staffordshire.police.uk/report, messaging us on our LiveChat via our website or call 101.
