Police Link Officer for Deaf People

What the police link officer involves.

Staffordshire Police has a number of people who are trained in deaf awareness who act as Police Link Officers for Deaf people. Their role involves:

  • Helping with enquiries involving people who are deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing.
  • Providing help to other police officers and staff who need to communicate with deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing people.
  • Promoting deaf awareness to other police officers and staff.
  • Finding ways of improving Staffordshire Police's service to deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people.
  • Linking in with local deaf organisations and groups.

The link officers regularly attend meetings at local deaf associations to raise awareness of their role and provide advice. The officers are able to help during incidents involving people who are deaf and make it much easier for them to communicate.

The force is committed to providing a service that meets the needs of the individuals of Staffordshire and this scheme enables us to communicate with deaf people effectively. It improves the service we can provide to people who are deaf and gives them confidence to report incidents to us, knowing there will be someone who can easily communicate with them.

For more information, help or assistance contact your link officer via the PLOD: Deaf/Deafblind/ Hard of Hearing form.
