The Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme lets you formally ask the police whether someone who has contact with a child or children:

Sarah's Law is for applications for information in relation to a specific child or children. You should use the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for checks on an employee or someone you are thinking of employing.
