Look Again to keep Staffordshire’s roads safe
Over the last year we have seen a high number of fatalities on roads across the county with 45 people sadly losing their lives.
Every road death is a tragedy and something we want to avoid.
Through our new road safety campaign, Look Again, we want to reinforce that as drivers we all have the ability to make our roads safer by taking simple actions.
Whether it’s taking a second look for other road users before pulling out at junction, adjusting your speed when driving in a busy town centre, or taking a moment to sense check a manoeuvre before you do it, these actions could save your life – and those of other road users.
Distractions
Distractions at the wheel come in many forms. You might be distracted by technology, other people in your car, or even by your own thoughts.
It’s really important to pay attention to the road at all times. Just one quick glance away can mean you miss something vital, such as a change in speed limit or another road user. It also gives you less time to react if a hazard appears unexpectedly.
Here are a few tips to help you stay focussed on the road:
- Keep your mobile phone out of reach in a bag or glove box to reduce the temptation to look or touch it when driving.
- If you have concerns about a passenger in the back, pull over and park where it is safe so you can take a proper look. Avoid trying to turn and look while you are driving as this can cause the car to swerve, plus you can’t see what may be coming.
- If you are driving a long distance take regular breaks so you aren’t driving tired.
Decisions
Every decision you make as a driver has consequences. Take a moment to think before you start a manoeuvre to make sure you have the time and space to complete it safely.
- Drive within your capability. Don’t try to stretch your skills too far as you could end up making a mistake.
- The speed limit is a maximum, not a target. Please drive within the speed limit but also consider any unique factors that might affect the road conditions, such as the weather, and drive appropriately.
- Give other road users the space they need to use the road safely. This includes the space between yourself and the road user in front, as well as the space to the side of your vehicle if you are overtaking. If you are passing a cyclist always leave at least 1.5 metres of space between you.
- Only overtake where it is safe to do so. Never overtake on a bend or where there is a solid white line in the middle of the road. Remember to check your blind spot before overtaking.
- Always look both ways before pulling out at junctions. If you are struggling to see past parked cars on either side of the junction, pull forward very slowly until you can see clearly.
- Avoid driving if you feel unwell. This can affect your decision-making processes, and also puts you and other road users in danger if you have a medical issue at the wheel.
