Launch of the first phase of Right Care, Right Person
Staffordshire Police implemented the first phase of the Right Care, Right Person (RCRP) programme on 6 February. The first phase relates to concern for welfare calls and walk-outs from health care facilities.
RCRP is a national programme being implemented by police forces across the country, working closely with statutory agencies including health and social care, to identify the most appropriate agency to provide care and support to members of our communities in crisis. Policing has traditionally responded to a broad range of incidents but this does not mean we are always the right agency to respond. RCRP will not stop us attending incidents where there is a real and immediate threat to life or serious harm, as we have a duty to protect our communities and will continue to do so. Yet there are circumstances where our partners in health or social care are best placed to offer help and support to vulnerable people.
We expect the new approach to take time to embed, but we are doing everything we can to ensure that our service to the public is not impacted. All our staff in our force control room have received specialist training and we will have dedicated floor-walkers in the contact centre to advise any call handlers needing further assistance with their decision-making. Lines of communication with key partners have also been established to ensure the right advice is available. We will meet daily with our partners to explore any challenges and resolve issues identified, with partners involved throughout.
It is important to stress that where there is a real and immediate risk to life or serious harm the person(s) involved will always be the most important concern, not the level of demand faced by officers. This is a major step that, hopefully in the long term, will ensure the best care for vulnerable individuals and free up more time for officers to respond to crime, deliver quality investigations and care for victims in need, and help us as we strive to become an outstanding local police service that cares.
Thank you for your support.
