We are appealing for anyone with information about the death of a woman in Hanley in the early hours of this morning (1 September) to get in touch.
At around 4:15am we were called to a report of a body on Foundry Street in Hanley. Officers attempted CPR, but sadly a woman in her 50s was pronounced deceased a short while later. We are currently in the process of locating her next of kin, who will be supported by specially-trained officers.
We are keeping an open mind about the circumstances leading up to her death and detectives are treating the death as unexplained at this time. No arrests have been made.
To assist with the investigation, a cordon has been setup at both ends of Foundry Street. Motorists are encouraged to take alternative routes through the city centre whilst the cordon remains.
Local officers are making enquiries with nearby residents and businesses and you will see an increased level of police in the area to help with intelligence gathering and to provide reassurance to the local community.
Anyone who may have witnessed anything out of the ordinary in the area overnight or has information about the incident should call 101 quoting incident number 114 of 1 September. Alternatively, for guaranteed anonymity, contact Crimestoppers - www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
