The parents of a 10-week-old baby girl, who died in 2019, have been sentenced for cruelty to a child.
The baby girl’s mother was sentenced to two years and seven months’ imprisonment at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court last Friday (15 November) after pleading guilty to cruelty to a child in December 2023.
Her father was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years at the same court yesterday (Wednesday 20 November) after he pleaded guilty to cruelty to a child in March 2024.
Paramedics were called to the family home in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, on 25 October 2019. They then called us with reports that the baby, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was in cardiac arrest.
She was taken to hospital and sadly died a few days later on 29 October 2019.
Detective Inspector Ian Fitzgerald, of our Major and Organised Crime Department, said: “This is a truly tragic case and our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the baby’s death.
“We will continue to work with our partners to protect children from harm, safeguard them and prevent tragic cases like this one.”
We have taken the decision not to name the parents in this case due to reporting restrictions regarding identifying children in this case.
