An off-duty husband and wife team who heroically saved the lives of another married couple in a house fire in Stafford have been recognised at our force awards.
PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley were shortlisted for the Excellence in Bravery award following an incident that happened in June this year.
The duo were driving home while off-duty when they spotted smoke coming from the house.
After calling 999, Mark and Katy forced open the front door of the house and tried to find out if someone was trapped inside. At this point, the garage was completely engulfed in flames.
A woman was found downstairs. Katy helped to bring her outside.
The woman then told Katy that her husband was upstairs. Mark tried to find him, but the fire was too dangerous.
Mark and Katy told the neighbours of the home nearby to get out after realising the wind was blowing the flames in their direction. They also managed to reassure the man who was trapped upstairs by speaking to him while firefighters began work to go inside.
He was later taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
Both the man and his wife have since made a recovery.
Katy and Mark’s swift and brave actions undoubtedly saved the lives of both occupants that evening.
