Defrosting theft spikes during cold weather snap

We’re urging people not to leave their vehicles unattended while defrosting following a recent spike in thefts across Staffordshire in recent days.

Between 6am and 10am, when most people are defrosting their vehicles ahead of going to work or doing their first journey of the day, thieves are looking for easy opportunities and have been targeting vehicles left unattended.

Recent reports in Stoke-on-Trent, Lichfield and South Staffordshire are being investigated.

At about 9am yesterday (Wednesday 20 November), a Ford Puma was stolen on High Street in Chase Terrace after it had been left running to defrost. The owner had the keys at the time but the offender drove the car away.

On Tuesday (19 November), a VW Passat was stolen in similar circumstances at about 6.50am on Waverton Road, Bentilee, Stoke-on-Trent.

It was recovered the same day and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Chief Inspector Paul Finlayson said: “We’re urging people not to make it easy for opportunists in this cold weather snap.

“Please make sure you stay with your vehicles at all times when they’re defrosting or running. Even if it means you’re going to be slightly late, it is better than having your vehicle stolen.

“Insurance companies likely won’t pay out of vehicles are stolen while they’re left running with the keys inside.

“Please allow for extra time in the morning before setting off to make sure your vehicle is fully defrosted.”
