Aspiring project manager and business analyst Blaize Williams is certainly living up to his name after coming to us through a trailblazing contract apprentice scheme.
Rather than a typical day release over two years, the Hays Recruitment model incorporates a 10-week ‘boot camp’ where apprentices get intensive training in project management and business analysis, completing and presenting regular case studies to build their knowledge.
We are the first police force in the UK to take on an apprentice via this route.
Driven by the opportunity to gain experience in the public sector and hone his leadership skills, project manager apprentice, Blaize, felt that we were the right fit for him.
He said: “Starting a new job can be seen like embarking on a thrilling new adventure and this is no different. Previously I have worked in a number of roles, most recently as an account manager at a software firm.”
As part of his onboarding, Blaize has been working on two projects; Op Soteria and the Evidential Property Review. He is now managing the latter. This gives him the chance to learn on the job and hone his project management skills.
The 30-year-old said: “Both projects are transformational in nature. The ultimate goal is to build upon existing processes and create an improved experience for the force; in turn enabling us to provide a better public service.
“Working in these teams I have met so many members of staff across various departments and roles, all of whom have been extremely friendly, considerate and supportive in my journey. I have been overwhelmed by the way in which I have been included and encouraged to voice my ideas.
“I have been given enough responsibility and challenged in the best way, and the experiences have given me the opportunity to hone my skills in an active, real time and impactful way. For me, this is invaluable.”
Blaize has been with us for six months now and as part of his role is currently also undertaking the Inspired Leadership course with the force.
Force programme manager, Richard Battams, said: “We are the first force in the country to take on an apprentice via this route and I am delighted that Blaize is doing so well after being thrown in at the deep end.”
Apprenticeship manager, Rebecca Crellin, added: “Apprenticeships are a brilliant way of developing people whilst benefitting from their work and insight. Whilst working with us, Blaize is gaining valuable experience of the organisation and in exchange, we are receiving a quality service from him.”
