A banned driver who stole a car the day after Boxing Day and crashed it into a wall in Leek has been jailed.
Marcus Oultram, 32, of Meerbrook, near Leek, was sentenced to one-and-a-half-years in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday 6 June after previously pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, using a motor vehicle on a road without third-party insurance, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, using threatening, abusive words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress and assaulting an emergency worker.
Oultram, who at the time of the collision was already disqualified from driving, was banned for a further five-years-and-nine-months and ordered to pay a surcharge of £187.
On Wednesday 27 December last year, we were called to Novi Lane in Leek after a Vauxhall Astra crashed through the perimeter wall of a block of flats at the junction of Novi Lane and Abbotts Road.
Oultram was seen running away from the scene by a member of the public. Officers later arrested him at his home address. He had suffered facial injuries during the collision and we took him to hospital for treatment.
However, on the way there, he assaulted an officer. Thankfully, they were not seriously injured.
PC Smith, from Moorlands local policing team (LPT), said: “Oultram was already banned from driving when this incident happened. Our message is simple; those who ignore the law and put themselves and others in danger will be targeted and caught as we continue to make our roads as safe as possible.”
