We’re encouraging people to stay vigilant of impersonation scams and the tactics of financial fraudsters.
An impersonation scam is when criminals pretend to be from companies you know in order to trick you into giving them personal details and financial information.
They often cold call their victims, try and gain their trust, and then access their finances after extracting the information from them.
We’re advising people to be aware of different ways scammers try to gain your information as they often pretend to be utility companies, emergency services or even your bank.
Here is some advice on how to stay safe:
If you believe you have been targeted by a scammer, hang up the phone and use a different phone line to call Action Fraud or the police. If you don’t have access to another phone line, we’d advise waiting for a short period of time before calling a family member or friend to ensure the scammer is no longer on the phone.
Always question suspicious phone calls and report them to Action Fraud or the police.
If you think you or someone you know has been defrauded, you can report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.
