Detectives are investigating after a man sadly died following an assault in Stoke-on-Trent.
We were called to Millrise Road, Milton, at 9.30pm on Sunday 7 May following reports that a man had been punched following an altercation with another man.
Neil Gaskell, aged 55, from Milton, suffered a serious head injury. He was rushed to hospital by paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service.
We then arrested an 18-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent in relation to the incident. He was later released on conditional bail with strict conditions while we completed our inquiries.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical staff, Neil was pronounced dead in hospital on Tuesday (23 May).
In a tribute, his family said: “Neil, known as Big Ne to many, was a loving husband and dad.
“He had a very dry and whitty sense of humour and a big heart.
“He will so very much be missed by his Wife, Daughter his family and many friends.”
Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hannan, from the force’s Major Investigations Department, said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with Neil’s family at this difficult time who are being supported by specially-trained officers.
“We are continuing to review CCTV footage and speak to witnesses to help us establish the circumstances which led to this man tragically losing his life.
“I’d like to thank those who have already come forward with information following our last appeal and I’d urge anyone with any information to get in touch.”
