A man has been sentenced after pleading guilty for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Marek Sektas, 41, of Rose Street, Stoke-on-Trent, was given an 18-month custodial sentence suspended for 24-months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday 11 March.
Sektas has also been disqualified from driving for two years and will have to take an extended re-test. He was ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work and pay a surcharge of £156 having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing on 7 January.
The court heard how Sektas was responsible for a collision with a cyclist on 1 June 2021.
Sektas, was driving a black Audi along Campbell Road, Stoke-on-Trent, at around 6.15am on Tuesday 1 June 2021. On entering the roundabout at the junction of the A5006 towards the A50, Sektas failed to give way, continuing straight on where he collided with a cyclist who had already entered the roundabout from his right.
The cyclist sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he remained for a number of weeks. He has been diagnosed with life-changing head injuries and, as a result, requires constant care.
PC Matt Brailsford, of the Staffordshire and West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This case highlights the devastating consequences of such a poor standard of driving and the serious and often life changing repercussions that this can have on vulnerable road users. The injuries sustained by the cyclist will have long lasting effects for both him and his family. I welcome the court’s decision to ban Sektas from driving for two years.”
