Officers are appealing for information after a man sustained life-threatening injuries in an assault in Hanley.
Police were called at 4.08am on Sunday (28 November) to Trinity Street, near to junction with Stafford Street, following reports of violence.
Officers attended along with West Midlands Ambulance Service.
A 28-year-old man was found unconscious at the scene.
He was conveyed to hospital by the ambulance service.
The victim sustained significant head injuries and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The offender is described as a white male, aged between 30-50, around 5ft 7inches to 6ft tall, of stocky build, wearing a camouflage-type patterned jacket, grey top and light blue jeans.
He was also wearing a distinctive bucket-style hat, which appeared to match the jacket, along with dark footwear which had white badges on the back and light brown soles.
Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage of the area at the time and speaking to witnesses.
Police urge anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.
Detective Inspector Adrian Webb, who is leading the investigation, said: “Were you out in Hanley at approximately 4am?
"Were you near the top of Trinity Street at the junction of Stafford Street?
"Did you see a disturbance or do you have important information about it?
"If so, please get in touch."
