Detectives are investigating a fire at a derelict property in Hanley.
Police were called at 10.30pm last night (Thursday 5 August) to Hope Street following reports of a fire.
Officers attended and two women were removed from the derelict property through a window by a male member of the public.
One woman, in her 30s, was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital before being transferred to a specialist burns unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. She is in a critical but stable condition.
The second woman, who is in her 40s, was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Officers closed the road and diverted traffic down a nearby one-way street instead.
Officers remain at the scene this morning (Friday 6 August) while inquiries are continuing.
