Following the fatal road traffic collision, which took place on the A50 in between the Baths Road and Trentham Road junctions yesterday morning (Sunday 15 April), we are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

The family of the 19-year-old man from London who died in the collision are receiving specialist support. We are awaiting formal identification before we publicly confirm his identity. The 18-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent, who was also travelling in the Toyota Aygo, is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

Two other vehicles were struck in the collision, the drivers of which both sustained minor injuries. The A50 remained closed in both directions until approximately 3pm yesterday as members of the emergency services investigated the scene.

We have voluntarily referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as officers had earlier attempted to stop the vehicle.

Sergeant Rich Moors from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are working with the Independent Office for Police Conduct to investigate the incident and would ask that any witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact 101 quoting incident number 177 of 15 April. We are particularly keen to trace any witnesses who were travelling on the eastbound (towards Uttoxeter) carriageway who witnessed the Toyota Aygo or police vehicles passing them or who have dashcam footage."
