Is it possible to register at my local police station?

No, appointments take place at Staffordshire Police Headquarters only. At certain times of the year appointments are available for new students on site at Keele and Staffordshire universities. Students should contact International Student Support for dates. 

Can somebody else register for me/can I register on behalf of somebody else?

No, the registration process involves confirming a person's identity and requires a signature so must be done in person. 

Will the registration certificate be available for me to collect on the day of my appointment?

Yes, upon successful registration you will be given your certificate at the end of your appointment.

Is there a charge if I need to update the details of my existing registration?

No, there is no charge when reporting changes to an existing registration. However you must ensure you book an appointment to visit us if any one of the details on this page have changed.

My home address is changing, do I need to tell you?

You must report to the local Police Overseas Visitor Registration Office in your new area of residence. You will continue to use your existing Registration Certificate so have this with you when you attend your registration appointment.  To find out which local police force will cover your new neighbourhood please click here.

If Staffordshire Police remains your local Police force then you must book an appointment to visit us and provide proof of your new address - further information about updating your details can be found here. Important - please do not attempt to register at your local police station, appointments take place at Staffordshire Police Headquarters only.

Do I need to carry my certificate with me when I am in the UK?

You are advised not to carry it with you whilst in the UK but keep it in a safe place together with your passport and BRP card. If you are asked to produce your Registration Certificate by a Police Officer you will be given 48 hours in which to do so at any police station. 

Do I need to take my certificate with me if I travel outside the UK?

Yes, you may be required to produce it by an Immigration Officer at any port during your travel.  If you plan to be out of the UK for more than 60 days then you must book an appointment to see us before you leave as you will be required to provide us with the details of your travel.

What do I do if my Registration Certificate is lost or stolen?

Your certificate is a legal document. You should report the loss/theft to your local Police force and make efforts to find/recover it before applying for a replacement.  If you are unable to recover it, you must register/log-in to the online system here and book an appointment to visit us. You will be asked about the circumstances of its loss/theft at your appointment.

There is a fee of £34 (cash) to issue a replacement certificate. You must bring with you your original damaged certificate, proof of current address, current passport, BRP card and proof of employment OR proof of student status.

 

What do I do if I damage my certificate?

You will need to replace it. Please book an appointment and bring with you your original damaged certificate, proof of current address, current passport, BRP card and proof of employment OR proof of student status.

There is a fee of £34 (cash) to issue a replacement certificate.

My certificate is full. Do I have to pay for a new one?

No, when a certificate is full we issue you with a new one free of charge.

I'm leaving the UK temporarily, do I need to let you know?

If you are leaving the UK for less than 60 days you do not need to inform us.  If you plan to be out of the UK for more than 60 days please contact us and provide details of your travel arrangements.

Can I use the same Registration Certificate if I leave the UK and then return at a later date?

Yes, but if plan to be out of the UK for more than 60 days then you must contact us and provide details of your travel arrangements.

I am leaving the UK and do not plan to return. Do I need to return my certificate?

No, however you are required to contact us and let us know of your arrangements.

What will happen if I do not comply with the requirement to register with the Police or fail to inform you of a change in details?

It is a legal requirement made by the Home Office under The Immigration Regulation Act 1971 that certain foreign nationals are required to register with the police, as a condition to remain in the UK. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and could result in either a fine of up to £5000 and/or 6 months imprisonment.

Can I book an appointment without using the online system?

No, since 1st April 2018 all appointments must be booked using the online system.

Can I register without an appointment?

No, we are unable to issue you with a Registration Certificate if you do not sign up to our online system and book an appointment to visit us.

The online system only lets me book appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, can I have an appointment on another day?

Appointments outside of the usual days are by exception and only in special circumstances. Please contact us if you are unable to attend on a Tuesday or a Wednesday.
