We've arrested a man from Stoke-on-Trent after he attempted to set fire to another man yesterday afternoon (12 February).

We were called at around 12.20pm on Monday following reports that a man was spraying lighter fuel over vehicles on Reedmace Walk in Newcastle-under-Lyme and trying to set them on fire.

The offender was challenged by a member of the public but the offender then sprayed the fuel in the man's face and attempted to set him on fire. Shortly after, the offender then carried out an attempted robbery of a Mercedes on Galingale View and assaulted the 42-year-old female driver of the vehicle.

A 37-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery. He was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle from earlier in the day.

He remains in police custody at this time and an investigation is on-going.

Colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.

The victim of the lighter fuel attack, a 54-year-old man from Newcastle-under-Lyme was treated at the scene.
