A man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife of 14 years after their marriage broke down.

Christopher Jeffery, aged 51, of Church Avenue, Baddeley Green, Stoke-on-Trent, had originally pleaded not guilty to murdering Sarah Jeffery at their home on the morning of 8 June 2017. However, he later changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court today (1 December). Jeffery has been told he will serve a minimum of 11 years and 241 days, although this is actually 11 years and 67 days as he has already served 174 days in prison.

The attack happened when Sarah returned home to collect some of her belongings after she had moved out four days earlier.

Jeffery admitted that he strangled her with the cord of her hair straighteners.

Shortly after killing Sarah, Jeffery rang his mother, then police, to tell them what he had done.

Detective Inspector Victoria Downing said: "This was a violent crime which resulted in a life being cut short in dreadful circumstances. Our thoughts are with Sarah's family at this tragic and difficult time."
