Equality and Diversity Award - PCSO Annette PowellCitation

Annette is part of the Police Link Officer for the Deaf (PLOD) team within Staffordshire Police, investing her own time to study sign language to support this role. Recently Annette was able to engage with a deaf couple in sign language to bring them reassurance which previously they had not been able to access when reporting ongoing anti-social behaviour. This brought the couple immense relief and even now, both professionals and friends of the couple comment on how well Annette could engage with them.

Early in 2017, Annette contacted local deaf groups to introduce herself and her role to expand the trust and confidence in the deaf community. This led to Annette holding regular drop-in police surgeries with Deafvibe and Deaflinks, plus giving up her own time to fundraise for groups by learning to sign Christmas carols and perform with the groups at local events.

At a recent Crown Court trial Annette co-ordinated support and communication for several deaf witnesses offering herself as the communication link between witness care and court staff during this daunting experience. Annette has recently took on the role of skilled helper officer which involves her engaging with vulnerable residents, assessing their concerns, creating pathways to support services and supporting them on this journey.

PCSO Powell is a genuine, caring officer where nothing is too much trouble to make a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable people. PCSO Annette Powell has over ten years' policing service and during this time she's always willing to offer help, support and reassurance to the community.
