Performance and Standards

Police Helmet on table in portraitThe Performance and Standards Unit aims to promote a culture of integrity, ethical behaviour and professional standards throughout Staffordshire Police. It is responsible for investigating complaints against the police by the public and also deals with internal allegations of misconduct.

Any member of the public can contact the Performance and Standards Unit by e-mail: psu@staffordshire.pnn.police.uk, by post to: Performance and Standards Unit, Police Headquarters, PO Box 3167, Stafford ST16 9JZ, attend a Police Station or speak to a member of the Performance and Standards Unit by ringing 01785 232416. They can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

Whilst it is the job of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to make sure complaints against the police are dealt with effectively and in some cases also investigate complaints, in the first instance all complaints made against Staffordshire Police should be sent to the Performance and Standards Unit of Staffordshire Police.

Police can refer cases involving their officers or staff voluntarily to the IPCC, although referrals in some instances are mandatory in cases of allegations concerning serious misconduct, death or serious injury on police contact or certain criminal acts. The IPCC can also direct a force to make a referral. Once  a complaint is referred to the IPCC they conduct an assessment of the allegation and decide who will investigate the matter. This can involve sending the complaint back to the Force to investigate or investigating an allegation themselves independently of the Force.
