Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG)

Police car watching motorway trafficThe Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) is a proactive, intelligence led, 24/7 operational team of officers and staff responsible for providing motorway roads policing and air support services across Staffordshire, West Mercia and West Midland Police Forces.

It is also responsible for the Staffordshire and West Midlands Collision Investigation Unit (CIU). They deal with the most serious and fatal road traffic collisions, also ensuring efficent Vehicle Recovery from the motorway.

The group has developed a range of effective tactics utilising an extensive ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) network to disrupt organised crime groups travelling the strategic roads network across the region.

Policing a significant pinch point within the national roads network provides opportunities not only to tackle criminality but to support civil contingency response and counterterrorism.

With the mission; 'Working Together to Protect and Serve Communities' the group helps to ensure that criminals operating across boundaries are tackled effectively to help maintain trust and confidence developed within local communities.
