Among your possessions you’ve packed your TV, DVD player, iPod and laptop and you’re ready to work hard and play hard as an undergraduate.
But, has it crossed your mind that as a student, living in halls of residence or digs, you are a prime target for criminals – specifically burglars?
Staffordshire has a large student population. As a force we work closely with the universities and colleges to make sure students can stay safe while they enjoy their time here.
We have created this area on the website to give students helpful hints and tips on all aspects of living in Staffordshire.
Many undergraduates will have had no responsibility of independent living before, and we would urge you to take on board basic crime prevention advice to keep yourselves and your belongings safe in your new environment.
We offer the following simple advice to new students:
- Close windows in rooms not in use and keep front and back doors locked and secured when not in those rooms.
- Remember, when you leave a window open – it's not just fresh air you let in, but potentially thieves too!
- Security mark valuables and keep them out of sight of windows
- Shred personal documentation before placing it in the bin
- Where possible buy shed alarms and cover vulnerable areas with security lighting
- Report faults with security to your landlord and request that they be fixed
- Report any suspicious activity to police.
Anyone with any concerns or requesting advice should contact Staffordshire Police on 101.
