'Honour' crime and forced marriage

What is ‘honour’ crime?

‘Honour’ crime mainly affects those in Asian communities where religious and cultural perceptions can result in the rights and safety of individuals being endangered.

This can affect both genders, and lifestyle and sexuality can be pivotal issues. Recrimination can result in; violence, fear of violence, forced marriages, rape, unlawful imprisonment and murder.

In cases of ‘honour’ crime, Staffordshire Police will investigate any incidents of violence or threats of violence in a sensitive and confidential manner. The police recognise the complexity of situations where victims may feel trapped by the confines of home, family, community and perceived duty.

There are a range of actions supported by legislation that the police can undertake depending on your wishes and concerns. The police can also work with other government and public service agencies to prevent you from being taken out of the UK against your will, for example.

The police can also assist you by putting you in touch with support networks that can help you more directly with the difficulties you face.
