Crimestoppers
Frequently asked questions
What is Crimestoppers?
Crimestoppers is a national charity set up to fight crime. Members of the public can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 in complete confidence with information about an offence and be sure no-one will ever know who made that call.
Why is it needed?
Fear of revenge, concerns for personal safety or loved ones will often stop people going to the police or giving evidence in court. And unless the police can get the evidence to stop them, these criminals will continue their activities without fear of prosecution.
How does it work?
By calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 people can give information about crime and criminals. All callers are guaranteed they cannot be identified, that calls will not be traced or recorded and they do not have to give a statement or go to court.
Where did the idea of Crimestoppers come from?
It started in America when police investigating the murder of a young man during a robbery were unable to find his killers. Believing the criminals were local, they set up an anonymous phone line for people to ring and identify the men who had done it. Within three days the killers were arrested. But to the officers’ surprise, as well as this success, they also received a number of calls about other crimes, some of which the police did not even know about. From this small beginning Crimestoppers was born, and was introduced to the UK in 1988.
Has it been a success over here?
It soon became apparent that there was a real demand from the public for this service. People who are fed-up with crime in their neighbourhoods, but who are too afraid to say anything, come forward to give information.
I've heard I might get a reward, is that true?
Where your call leads to the arrest and charge of a criminal a reward of up to £1,000 can be offered. This money is paid through the bank in such a way that the caller cannot be identified - by the criminals or police.
What crimes has it helped to fight?
One of the greatest areas of success for Crimestoppers has been in targeting drug dealers, especially of Class A drugs such as heroin, crack and cocaine. These drugs cause untold misery in our communities, both to addicts and those who are robbed or who have their homes burgled for money to feed the junkie’s habit.
The charity is also keen to hear about offences such as burglary, vehicle crime, stolen property, violence and robbery.
Isn't it easier to just ignore what's going on?
Communities can be blighted by crime. It could be your parents who are burgled, your friends who are robbed, your children who get hooked on drugs.
Your information can put these people behind bars and make our neighbourhoods pleasanter and safer places to live.
Remember - Crimestoppers does not and cannot record or trace your call, you will not be asked for any personal details. Calls from landlines and most mobiles are free and you may receive a reward.
