Legal Services

The force's legal team helps us to bring offenders to justice and represent our interests.

Staffordshire Police established its own in-house solicitor’s office in October 1995 to provide a specialist legal advice and representation service for the force.

The role of the department is to act or advise in any field where there’s a legal threat to the force’s ability to deliver an efficient, effective and ethical policing service to the people of Staffordshire.

The unit deals with the following areas of work, namely, advising or representing the force in relation to police powers, proceeds of crime, firearms licensing, liquor licensing, sex offender orders, closure orders, anti-social behaviour orders, inquests, employment law, police property act pplications, misconduct hearings, disclosure (other than for family court which are dealt with by the disclosure unit) and various other matters.

The unit is also involved in instructing external solicitors and barristers to represent the force, whether in relation to compensation claims against the Chief Constable and/or the Police Authority or any other sorts of claim (i.e. contract) where external legal assistance is required.
