Justice Services

The force’s justice services department supports operational policing by providing a range of services which support crime victims and witnesses, and more widely, Staffordshire Police’s work with other criminal justice partners in Staffordshire.

The force’s justice services department has two main roles:

  • making sure that crime victims and witnesses receive support and guidance
  • ensuring that the force’s contribution to the criminal justice process, and in particular its treatment of offenders, is efficient and fair

Justice services supports operational policing by providing specialist services. These are reflected in the many different units which make up the department:

  • central prosecutions
  • central ticket office
  • criminal justice support units (CJSUs)
  • crown court liaison
  • identification suite
  • operational policy and research unit (OPPRU)
  • police national legal database (PNLD)
  • property management system
  • witness support team
  • witness care team.

Managed by a superintendent, justice services is responsible for developing policies, procedures and guidance designed to achieve force and national objectives.

All new government legislation, existing laws, Home Office guidance and other policy relevant to policing, is analysed to evaluate its effect on the force.

A key responsibility of the department is to provide support to victims and witnesses of crime in partnership with other agencies such as Victim Support and Witness Support. The department provides specialist services which support victims and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process so that they are more confident in giving evidence in court.

Road Traffic Collisions

The TPO (Traffic and Process Office) is responsible for the administration of all Road Traffic Collision files.

A new guide has been launched by Staffordshire Criminal Justice Board in a bid to change public perception about how the criminal justice system works in the county.
