Hate crime is defined as a crime:

'Where the perpetrator’s prejudice against any identifiable group of people is a factor in determining who is victimised.'

This could include offences from assault and damage to verbal abuse and vandalism. Staffordshire Police recognises that members of different minority groups can become victims of hate crime. Homophobia, racism and abuse of people with disabilities are amongst the type of incidents that would count as hate crimes.
