Domestic abuse
What are the effects of domestic abuse?
Victims may suffer any or many of the following:
- loss of opportunity
- isolation from family and friends
- loss of income or work
- homelessness
- feelings of anxiety, depression or poor self-esteem
- poor health
- physical injury or ongoing impairment
- death.
Domestic abuse is the single most-often given reason for women becoming homeless. Nationally, up to half of all female homicide victims are killed by present or former partners. This compares with just over five per cent of male homicide victims.
