If you think you could be a victim

There are some basic guidelines which, when followed, make you far less likely to fall victim to these people. The key is:

  1. Stop. Think - are you expecting anybody to call? Do they have an appointment? If you have a back door, make sure it is locked before you answer the front door
  2. Chain. Make sure the door is secured either with a door bar or chain before opening the door
  3. Check. Ask for a form of identification from the caller. If they are genuine they will always be happy to provide this. Always double check and if there is any doubt call the organisation they claim to be from looking up the number in the phone book or by checking the number from a recent bill.

A genuine caller will be happy to wait and pleased to know you take precautions. Or if you prefer, take their details and arrange for them to come back at a different time when you have a friend or family member with you.

If you believe there is a bogus caller at your door, then contact police immediately on 999. It will help police if you are able to give a description of the caller, so jot down a few details if you can (approximate height, build, hair colour and style, clothing and distinguishing marks).

Remember, distraction burglars are able to operate because they are convincing. They may work on their own, in pairs or in larger groups. They can be any age, and could well be women or children.

There are other ways you can help to make yourself safer from these bogus callers. Don't be persuaded by 'props' like a uniform or overalls - anyone genuine should have made an appointment with you beforehand. If this was done by letter, check their identification against the letter. Or if they agreed a password in advance, don’t let them in without it.

If you are still not sure about the caller, arrange for them to come back later when you will have a friend or family member with you. Don't worry that you may appear unfriendly or unhelpful - genuine callers understand why you are doing this.
