Background

Over the last five years car crime in Staffordshire has fallen significantly. Thefts of and from vehicles fell by nearly a third (30 per cent) while the number of car crimes solved rose by 60 per cent.

However, there is more that everyone can do to cut this figure still further. By being careful and taking precautions, you can reduce the chance of being a victim even more. For example:

  • take all the valuables out of your vehicle when you park
  • lock the doors and close windows and the sunroof
  • park somewhere that is well lit and preferably with closed circuit television (CCTV)
  • keep your keys in a safe place at home
  • postcode your audio equipment, not forgetting the satellite navigation system
  • if possible fit a locking petrol cap
  • buy and use a steering lock
  • have your car registration number etched on every window
  • consider fitting a vehicle tracking device
  • don’t leave driving documents in the car - they may help a thief to sell it.
