Roll of Honour

Staffordshire Police has established a Roll of Honour, which dates back to when the force was established in October 1842.

It reads:
In remembrance of those police officers and members of police staff who have lost their lives in the line of duty as a result of criminal acts, enemy action, misadventure or accident, natural causes and unknown causes.

Died 5 September 1994
Killed when in collision with a van while cycling to work.

PC John David Taylor (aged 26)
Died 23 November 1986
Fatally injured when pushed from the seventh floor of a block of flats when attempting to arrest a burglar.

PC Graham Whitehurst (aged 33)
Died 17 January 1985
Killed in a police car collision while responding to an emergency call.

PC Robert David Owen (aged 28)
Died 17 January 1985
Killed in a police car collision while responding to an emergency call.

PC Nigel Thomas Parnell
Died 26 August 1980
Killed in a motorcycle collision whilst escorting an abnormal load.

PC Dennis Tunnicliffe (aged 27)
Died 9 March 1976
Killed when his police motorcycle was in collision with a car.

PC David Hunt (aged 30)
Died 9 March 1976
Killed when his police motorcycle was in collision with a car.

PC Robert Michael Potts (aged 22)
Died 9 August 1968
Fatally injured when his motorcycle was in collision with a petrol tanker.

Died 24 February 1967
Killed when struck by a car while assisting at the scene of a breakdown.

Sgt Peter Louis Harman (aged 27)
Died 2 January 1967
Fatally injured in a road traffic collision while travelling to duty.

PC Edward Horace Wilkins (aged 34)
Died 3 March 1952
Killed in a fall from a lorry which gave him a lift to the police station.

Inspector James Weaver (aged 50)
Died 10 October 1946
Collapsed and died on duty as drill instructor at the training centre.

PC Brinley James Booth (aged 31)
Died 6 June 1946
Fatally injured when bludgeoned by a suspect he chased and caught.

PC Harold Bridges (aged 21)
Died 3 April 1942
Fatally injured in a road traffic collision while on motorcycle patrol.

SC Thomas Arthur Richardson (aged 40)
Died 22 October 1939
Fatally injured when struck by a car while on night duty.

Inspector Walter Cecil Bett (aged 35)
Died 13 January 1930
Fatally injured in a road accident whilst on motorcycle patrol swerving to avoid a drunk.

In grateful Remembrance of those officers of the police forces of Staffordshire who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.

Fatally injured when struck by a lorry whilst on patrol at night.

Died 28 January 1928
Fatally injured when struck by a car whilst on traffic duty.

Inspector Samuel John Gibbs (aged 47)
Died 19 February 1908
Died after twice fracturing his leg in falls whilst on duty.

PC William Ezra Price (aged 35)
Died 26 January 1903
Bludgeoned to death while attempting to arrest three men for theft.

PC Henry William Brown (aged 28)
Died 7 August 1887
Beaten and drowned in a canal. Suspected to be by poachers.

Died 8 July 1887
Accidentally shot by another officer examining a gamekeeper’s gun.

PC Henry Cooke (aged 36)
Died 8 March 1879
Shot and wounded on duty in 1877 and as a result died of heart failure.

Died December 1865
Stabbed to death whilst assisting another officer attacked during an arrest.

Fatally injured when hit by a brick whilst trying to arrest a disorderly man.

Died 25 September 1862
Fatally injured when assaulted by three men he tried to move on at night.

Stoke-on-Trent Borough Police

PC Raymond Harris (aged 38)
Died 27 July 1939
Collapsed and died after dealing with two prisoners during the night.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Police

PC John Welsh (aged 47)
Died 9 January 1915
Fatally injured while on patrol when he was knocked down by a tramcar.

Parish of Chesterton

Died 5 May 1843
Stabbed to death whilst trying to arrest poachers in Chesterton.
