Non-emergency number

Staffordshire Police has a new number – 0300 123 4455 - for non-emergency calls. You can now either:

  • call 0300 123 4455 where one of our local call handlers will put you through to the person you need to speak to
  • direct dial the person you want
  • contact the officer directly through their collar number

Your questions answered...

  1. Why has the new number been introduced?
We took the opportunity of a change of service provider to establish a new number.  This is in line with guidance from the Office of Communications (Opens in new window) (Ofcom), which established 03 numbers to help eliminate public confusion over call costs.
  2. How was the new number chosen?
We asked, listened and acted by picking the number which was selected by the force’s Citizens’ Panel and the Communications Independent Advisory Group. The choice of the 0300 123 4455 number was based on how easy it is to remember and dial.
  3. What will the service cost?
Calls to 03 numbers cost no more than calls beginning 01 and 02, and are included in any BT inclusive call minutes or discount schemes. However, the exact price you pay depends upon the terms and conditions of your service provider.
  4. Can I continue to call my local police station?
The call-handler will transfer you to the person best able to help you – such as an officer at your local police station. But if you need to speak to someone else, and you are not sure where they are based, the call-handler is ideally placed to put you through to the person you need to speak to.
  5. Who will answer my call and where are they based?
Your call will continue to be answered by our switchboard operators who have extensive knowledge of Staffordshire and its communities and know where to direct your call.
  6. What is meant by an emergency call?
An emergency (999) call is defined as any enquiry which relates to the following:
    - violence being used or threatened
    - a danger to life
    - a crime is in progress or a offender has been disturbed
    - an injury road collision
    - a non-injury road collision causing serious traffic congestion.
  7. Can I still dial straight through?
If you know the direct dial for an individual officer or member of police staff this is still the best number to get them on. If you know their extension, direct dial 01785 23 followed by the extension. For extension numbers starting with 86, 87 or 88 dial the prefix 01785 21…

Contact your local team

The teams include police sergeants, constables, police community support officers (PCSOs) and special constables, who work closely with local authority colleagues to make your community an even safer place to live.

It's easy to keep in touch with your local beat bobby or PCSO via their digital Airwave radio. Simply:

  • dial 0300 123 2345 and listen to the instructions
  • when prompted enter their Airwave number (shown next to their photo)
  • a recorded message asks you to 'state your name so the call can be announced' - just say your name so the officer knows who's calling

If the officer is on duty, their radio rings like a mobile phone and you'll be connected. If they're off duty or dealing with victims, witnesses or offenders, your call goes to the officer's individual voicemail box.

Remember, in an emergency dial 999.
