How to make a complaint

Staffordshire Police is committed to putting the community at the heart of everything we do and providing a service our family and friends would be proud of.  We welcome feedback from you to tell us how we are doing. Your views are important to us.

Although Staffordshire Police is pledged to consistently deliver the highest standards of service we acknowledge that there are occasions when we get things wrong. If you are not satisfied with the service you have received from us or are unhappy with the conduct of a police officer or member of police staff, you can make a complaint.

Registering your dissatisfaction helps us see where and why we have failed to meet the high standards you expect from us. It allows us, where possible, to attempt to put things right; to learn from our deficiencies and to take steps to prevent a reoccurence; where individual failures have occurred, to hold members of staff to account and to take measures to improve the service we provide to you as an individual and to the community as a whole.  How will my complaint be dealt with?

What are the standards I can expect of the Police?

The ‘Standards of Professional Behaviour' (Word, 52kb) (Opens in new window) for police officers are contained in the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2008 and have been further defined by Home Office Guidance.

The ‘Standards of Professional Behaviour’ for police staff are very similar but not identical to those for police officers. They have been produced by the Police Staff Council and were published in September 2008 under Joint Circular No. 54.

If you have difficulty in understanding English a number of booklets and leaflets which contain explanations about complaints procedures are available in other languages from the website of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. (Opens in new window)

If you have a disability which affects our ability to communicate with you, or your ability to communicate with us, we will take reasonable steps to overcome any  difficulties which arise.

Staffordshire Police's commitment

Staffordshire Police strives to deliver the best possible service to all sections of the community without unfair discrimination according to age, disability, gender, race, religion/belief or sexual orientation.

To help us understand and monitor whether we are providing a fair service and to enable us to meet our legal obligations in relation to diversity, we ask for your co-operation in providing brief information about:

  • Your date of birth
  • Whether you consider yourself to be disabled
  • Your gender
  • Your ethnic or racial origins
  • Your sexual orientation
  • Your faith/belief

We appreciate these are issues of a personal nature and you have the right to refuse to answer them. Any information you provide will be treated in the strictest confidence.
